First Battle of Manassas, July 1861 (November 2013)

Or Bull Run ... I should call it Manassas, though, as I fought (am fighting) on the southern side.

This was the first of a two (or I suspect more) part game - and represented the action til noon.

The battle was staged by Will in his newly configured games suite (upstairs shed if you like) and featured Ian's last game and Graham H as prodigal relative.  They took the Northerners.

The figures are 20mm plastics with Fluttering Flags and the rules were a simplified version of RFCM's Civil War Battles.

In the opening phases, the North chose to push to their right whilst engaging in a firefight from Matthews Hill on Rebs around the Stone House.

(Union forces lining the trees on Matthews Hill)

(Cavalry detachments explore the flank of Henry Hill)

(Union forces eventually push more robustly at the Southern centre)

The push to the Stone House was repulsed by a couple of volleys and some canister into the flanks of the column, and Rebs decided to push up to this position themselves to see if it would inconvenience the enemy.

But most of the Union morning was spent pushing around the western edge of the battlefield.

(Noon: Stone House - the Southern Commanders have chosen to reinforce their centre)

(Noon: Henry Hill - the outflanking brigades are beginning to muscle up for an attack from the West)

The battle is getting set and the issue may well be settled in the afternoon phase which is scheduled for next week.
