Must-See Art: Infinity Mirrors Traveling Exhibition in 2017

Earlier this year, in a city as vibrant and culturally diverse as Los Angeles, thousands of people from all over the world were lined up to see a reflection.

To be more accurate, they were lined up to see legendary Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirror exhibit, titled The Infinity Mirror Room – The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away.

With over 65 years of experience, Kusama’s art explored colors and reflections in ways that previous infinity mirror concepts have not. The exhibit boasted walls of mirrors, water, colorful LED lights creating a kaleidoscope effect and a truly unique experience for each individual.

The rooms themselves are totally immersive and best experienced by only a few participants at a time. Unlike traditional art, the person viewing it is truly part of the experience. In one such room, Kusama explores a polka dot motif, titled Dots Obsession – Love Transformed Into Dots, which is a room in the shape of a dome with dots hanging directly from the ceiling itself.

Another one of Kusama’s room is a hexagonal room with a rainbow explosion of colors reflected from ceiling to floor.

It truly is the evolution of an art form. Kusama combines homages to history while understanding light and reflection in a way that few others in the world are able to. The exhibit alone is worth the trip to any museum, wherever you may be visiting.

Those interested in experiencing the Infinity Mirrors first hand can have a glimpse in 2017 in select cities. Yayoi Kusama’s artwork is a traveling exhibition that will open 2017 at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum in February. It will also include stops at the Seattle Art Museum, the Broad, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Cleveland Art Museum.
